Our deal of the week is a breath-taking Ocean Majesty Cruise through Spitzbergen, the Fjords & the Arctic Circle. This wonderful 17-day holiday, departing on the 1st June 2008, is normally priced at £2129. However, a whopping £510 per person discount for this departure brings the price to only £1619 per person.
This cruise is with one of our carefully selected tour operators, Page & Moy, and promises to be an unforgettable experience - witness the Midnight Sun cast a blaze over the Arctic Ocean at the North Cape, travel to remote Spitzbergen, a mere 600 miles from the North Pole, and watch seals playing in the seas.
Your itinerary includes a number of wonderful highlights, including Norway’s westernmost town of Floro, twice voted ‘the most pleasant place to live in Norway’. You will also visit Alesund, with its distinctly Art Nouveau style, and Honningsvag once into the Arctic Circle. From Honningsvag, you will be taken aback as you cross the dramatic, desolate terrain to the North Cape, where you'll have an opportunity to stand on the 307 metre high cliffs and gaze out over the Arctic Ocean. Cruising past the North Cape, you will be able to bask in the glory of the Midnight Sun.
The biggest highlight though has got to be Spitzbergen. You will find out how communities survive in incredibly remote conditions with 24 hours of darkness in the winter, and 24 hours of daylight in the summer. The Norwegian town of Longyearbyen, which you will visit, nestles between the mountains and the edge of the Isfjord. Stunning Magdalenafjord, another town on the itinerary, has a sheltered inner harbour that is considered to be one of Spitzbergen’s most scenic.
On the western edge of Spitzbergen, Ny Alesund is a haven for wildlife and an important centre for scientists and environmentalists. Look out for graceful Svalbard reindeer, small ringed seals and some of the several hundred thousand birds that make their nests in the region. And as you cruise back towards Norway, you will be able to look out for whales.
There is more to come, with the attractive city of Tromso which was once the headquarters of the seal and walrus hunters and the starting point for several Arctic expeditions, and the Lofoten Islands with their wonderful scenery of jagged mountain peaks, cliffs and deep fjords. Then onto Andalsnes & Molde; the spectacular Romdalsfjord, and Molde in the shadow of snowcapped mountains on the northern shores of Moldefjord. A visit to Bergen’s quayside is included, and also Bryggen, the Hanseatic quarter of the city, where colourful wooden gabled warehouses, narrow alleys and a fascinating museum can all be found.
This really is a cruise not to be missed, especially at this price of £1619 per person for 1st June 2008 departures (other dates and prices are available).
