There has been a recent drop in posts due to the fact that I've been in New York for a week - pretty much doing as the title of this post suggests - eating and shopping! I was on holiday with my teenage son (New York is the perfect destination for hard-to-please teens - you can find numerous distractions that actually stop them from grumping) and we stayed in the fabulous downtown location of Greenwich Village - home to hip shops and funky eateries.
The 'Big Apple' is definitely the most wonderful city to eat in, because there is pretty much any cuisine you want at any budget, and with the current weakness of the dollar, going out for a plush meal in NYC is like going for an average curry in the UK!
We enjoyed Sushi, Mexican, Polish food (a comfort for us as my family - on my Mother's side - are Polish, and we eat pierogi all the time!), American diner-style (we couldn't help but try out Ellen's Stardust Diner, as touristy as it maybe, for the singing wait staff!), and even ventured out to Brooklyn and the famous Coney Island, so I could get a hotdog at Nathan's (though maybe I should have done this after riding the Cyclone twice).
Also, because my son is well, 15, the trip resulted in many treks around some of the funkier clothing stores like Yellow Rat Bastard and Urban Outfitters, where he proceeded to drain our holiday spending funds to a slow trickle. Admittedly, I made some small purchases as well, but for once, not as much as my son! Traipsing around some of the rare record shops and music stores, around Bleecker Street and the Village, were also a part of our ad hoc itinerary.
New York does have so much more to it than food and shopping, of course, but for soaking up the atmosphere and meeting New Yorkers, eating out can really be the key to experiencing New York culture. Shopping? Well less so. Although we were lucky enough to be in Macy's on the last day of their famous flower show - and what a beautiful sight to behold that was (although a little too busy and crowded for my liking).
