The Grand Sumo Tournament in Japan takes place 6 times a year in different parts of the country. The July event is in Nagoya from 14-28 July, and Japanese specialist Jaltour are offering tailor-made holidays to watch this fascinating sport.
You will have the chance to see the rituals and culture surrounding the traditional sport and in fact, with bouts only taking a few minutes each, it is the ceremony of the event that plays the most important part of a day at the sumo.
You can combine this event with a generalised itinerary in Japan, as Nagoya can be easily reached from both Kyoto (about 36 minutes by bullet train), and Tokyo (about 2 hours by bullet train). Rail tickets and tournament passes can easily be arranged as part of the trip.
Other exciting tours once in Japan Jaltour include a 2-day climbing tour to Mount Fuji. An exciting challenge and once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, for 2 months of the summer in July and August, people are able to climb Mt Fuji, Japan’s highest mountain at 3776 metres.
With Jaltour, we can make the arrangements for you to be picked up in Tokyo and taken by coach to Mt Fuji, where you will climb with an experienced English-speaking mountaineer through the afternoon. After a dinner of curry and rice and a nap, you will begin climbing again to reach the summit by about 4am, hopefully being able to watch a spectacular sunrise while eating breakfast from a traditional bento box.
On the way back to Tokyo, stop for an onsen (hot spring bath) to rest your weary legs. Although beginners are able to do this climb, sturdy footwear, appropriate hiking gear and clothing is necessary.
