The golden beaches and rocky shores of California stretch for more than 1,200 miles, so it is little wonder that this US state is known as the Golden State, made even more so by the fact that it revels in golden weather for most of the year. From the deserts, beaches, cities and mountains within the 12 regions of California, any visitor is spoilt for choice - in fact, you can be truly dazzled by what there is to see and do here.
Of course, the state is most famous for Los Angeles and the glitz of Hollywood, and you already know you won't be disappointed by the starry nightlife glamour that LA promises to all of its guests. And in the city San Francisco, you'll find five-star dining, a thriving theatre scene, and gay and lesbian culture, without not forgetting the Golden Gate Bridge.
San Diego, on the other hand, is known for its wonderful outdoor pursuits, such as white water rafting on the Kern River, and is favoured by golf enthusiasts as well as beach lovers.
However, you might not be looking for the lights of LA or the bustling of the cities like San Fransisco and San Diego, and instead, much prefer to be in your walking boots trekking sand dunes and desert landscapes. Yes, this type of experience is promised to you in abundance in California also, and you cannot visit without making the trip to Death Valley (which is Nevada, but you're close!).
California is a destination in which you can ski, surf and sunbathe on the same day, eat the most amazing food from around the world on one street, and attend a multitude of multi-cultural events on the same weekend! And, with the shape of the dollar at the minute, now is really the time to visit the USA.
When to go:
California's climate is often compared to that of the Mediterranean, due to warm, dry summers, and mild, wet winters. On the coast, average yearly temperatures range between the low 4.4°C (40s°F) and in the high 21.1°C (70s°F) and 26.7°C (80s°F). Farther inland, summers are hot and dry, and at higher altitudes the weather is more typical of a four-seasons cycle with cold, snowy winters.
The contrast is clear in the state’s two largest cities, where you’ll find very different weather patterns. San Francisco is famous for its fog — especially in the summer, and Los Angeles is known for its consistently sunny, desert-like coastal climate.

Escorted, private and tailor-made tours
We work with a number of quality tour operators that offer fantastic holidays to California, and the main problem you'll have is deciding where to go. Some of our tour operators have itineraries which take in neighbouring states of Arizona and Nevada. Of course, tailor-made options are ideal for people who prefer to be more flexible of include different things on their itinerary that may not be offered in a tour - whereas escorted tours are perfect for people who want to take it easy with their planning and who prefer to let someone else take over the driving!
