I can't believe it has gotten to 2009 and I still haven't managed to jot down a note or two about my adventures in Colorado, USA, where I was late last September! I had been given a great opportunity to go on an adrenaline junkie trip to this amazing western state to write about it - and have to say, I would go back in the blink of an eye.
Not only was it just marvellous to witness the natural spectacle of the 'fire in the mountains' - where the Aspen leaves turns gold and red amongst the huge quantity of leafy green that has yet to turn colour - but it was also exciting to find out what Colorado offers the traveller seeking thrills, and try some new things out.
While in the state, I managed to go rock-climbing at Eldorado Canyon, quad-biking in the mountain tracks around Buena Vista, 'Sky-coastering' over the Royal Gorge Valley, white-water rafting down the Arkansas River, and even indoor sky-diving at Skyventure in Colorado Springs. I bailed out of doing the world's unofficially highest bungee jump from the Royal Gorge Suspension Bridge, but I think I managed to do pretty well with the other activities!
The region is fabulous for general walking, hiking and other outdoorsy stuff - we went for a wander in the Flatirons mountains surrounding Boulder, where a lot of people climb, and were just bowled over by the scenery. Boulder itself is a lovely town, with quite a leaning towards 'alternative health' and a very relaxed attitude.
The visit certainly challenged my views on seeing Colorado as a ski resort for the winter months, and even more so, it is so relaxed you'd find it hard to believe you were in the states and could easily imagine you were in Canada. The only downside for this trip for me was that I seriously burnt my nose ( to the level of bleeding!) while on the quad bikes - those visors on the helmets can seriously reflect the sun, so much care is needed to protect extremities! And I'm generally SO careful!
