Back in May this year, I went with On
The Go Tours to participate in their 11-day Migration of the Berbers
tour, an inaugural trip that was to be the experience of a lifetime
for me, in more ways than one!
I was heading out there as a journalist to write about the trek for adventure travel magazine Wanderlust, and I felt it was very much a privilege to have such an opportunity, which you can now read all about in the November issue of Wanderlust.
Of course, being on this trip also gave me the chance to try it out from a customer-perspective. It was my first 'real' trek – and I found it tough as a 'newbie' to trekking, not helped by the fact that I got a dicky tummy and the facilities were truly back to basics, which means popping behind a rock when you needed to go!
However, wanting to be part of a very unique experience such as the Berber migration, where the nomadic Berbers leave the lower valleys and head into the mountains for the summer (and also do the trek in the opposite direction for the winter), there was no other way to do it than go 'back to nature'.
Camping surrounded by the sounds of the
herds, spending evenings around the fire with the Berbers, and
trekking through magnificent and totally off-the-beaten-track
mountain trails following camels was all part of what this tour
offered.
It was something that very few people on the planet ever get to be part of, and I came back feeling not only like I'd really achieved something, but also that I'd had my eyes open to a totally different way of life.
The next Migration of the Berbers tour will run in May 2010, and having first-hand experience of it, if you're interested to book, I'm very well-placed to advise.
As a special gift if you do book through Wren Elite Travel, I'll also throw in a Lonely Planet Encounter guide to Marrakesh for the time you spend in this vibrant city (you have 3 nights here!).
The tour is £599 per person not including flights and based on two-sharing, plus a local payment of EURO 300.

Trekking and cycling tours are some of the best to be had for getting to explore the bits of a country that tour buses or trains just can’t take you, and we work with a number of wonder tour operators who offer this type of experience, such as Explore!, Exodus, and The Adventure Company.
